ActKnowledge on the ground in Knoxville...

In June 2009 Al Reynolds and ActKnowledge associate Catherine Borgman-Arboleda conducted an evaluation workshop for member funders of the Funding Exchange in Knoxville, Tennessee.  "FEX" is a national membership organization of community foundations working to build a sustainable institutional and financial base to support progressive social change through fundraising for local, national, and international grant making programs.  The workshop dealt with some of the biggest challenges for social justice advocates/activists: How to make evaluation relevant and valuable for FEX grantees and member funds, participatory evaluation approaches, how to evaluate and articulate the value of social justice/social change strategies, and more.

Two-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to evaluate the Foundation’s Tobacco Policy Change (TPC) program:

The evaluation seeks to determine which approaches to coalition-building and policy advocacy were effective overall and in Native American, African American, and Latino communities in particular.  ActKnowledge will create a Theory of Change (TOC) for the Tobacco Policy Change Initiative as the framework for learning and evaluation across the entire scope of the project.  The evaluation will inform future funding and program development decisions, provide lessons learned and best practices to the field, and add to the literature on mixed-method advocacy evaluation in public health and specifically in tobacco prevention and cessation.

Theory of Change Training

ActKnowledge completed our first general training in theory of change methodology May 19-21, 2008, at the Graduate Center.  We thank our 20+ participants from around the U.S. and the U.K., who are all skilled facilitators in social change work, for the skill, commitment, and knowledge they brought to the training and shared with one another.

Participants posed a set of questions on method. The questions, and answers reflecting ActKnowledge's own perspective, appear here:
